That money is on the top five list of things couples fight over and get divorced because of.
I used to not be so great at handling money myself (never having learned from my parents, who fought about money all the time) and so I was in my early 40s before the lightbulb went on and I got it.
Now I pay my bills first (deposits to my savings accounts being one of them) and whatever is left over is my mad money.
Simple concept, but awfully hard to implement if there's no motivation. For me, the motivation is good credit and no worries about bill collectors.
