(52,855 posts)True story: Texaco had created an ad campaign calling the Man with the Star a Big Friend. To go along with it, they made 300 fiberglass Big Friends and put them at Texaco stations all over America. Apparently they came in a crate and had to be assembled on site.
Well
the one my hometowns Texaco Dealer got was assembled with the feet on backwards, so they hauled it to a field beside the airport and dumped it. The school football team found it. They asked the Man with the Star if they could have it as a mascot, and the Man with the Star, who was a very nice man (I knew him), said they could. They buried him in concrete up to his ankles in front of the elementary school, and there he has stood for about 50 years. He now wears a knit cap, has a checkered flannel shirt and carries a huge axe because the school sports collective is the Lumberjacks.
