(3,908 posts)We were on vacation and our car had overheated so we stopped for about an hour to let it cool off. I didn't have the strength that day (MS) to get the radiator cap off to check to see if it needed to be filled so I asked my 12 year old son to try it. At that moment the block cracked (we didn't know that) and the oil and water mixed and it shot way up in the air and back down on my sons hand arm and face. He dashed up and washed it off and cooled it down but still had a first and few second degree burns so we decided to go to the next hospital we saw after refilling the radiator. Because of the cracked block the engine started but only got a little ways past the entrance ramp before it died forever. A couple stopped and offered us a ride to the next town but I thought that leaving the hamster in the car in the sun would kill it and there wasn't room for the cage so my son put it in his hoodie pocket. We figured we would figure out something. I still feel guilty about asking him to do that but there I was told there was no way for me to know that was going to happen.
By the time we reached the nearest phone at a gas station he was hurting and was looking not so good. The guys at the station having been burned by antifreeze mixture called an ambulance for the hospital that was back the direction we had come from. We got registered and the hamster decided he really didn't want to stay in the pocket so he kept popping out. I even went to the gift shop to try to find something, no luck. Pretty soon we had people coming to see the hamster and it turned out the staff was cool about it under the circumstances. He got medicine and pain killers and we just had to go have it checked every three days to watch for infection at urgent care facilities. The next stop on our vacation was Mammoth Cave for a few days and it was nice and cool and out of the sun so it was the perfect place for him to be.
The station towed our car in to look it over and came and picked us up at the hospital. We stayed there one night and someone brought us a borrowed car so we could continue on what turned out to be our one and only long vacation. I mailed the title to the gas station and was told someone had already wanted it to put a new engine in it. We paid for the tow and they would only take a little more for coming to fetch us at the hospital, must have been empathy. Life is sometimes an adventure.
