64. It's complex for me

Aug 2012

I've become very disillusioned with the quality, depth and even the acting in Hollywood theatrical releases over the past decade and the last time I remember going to a cinema was about five or six years ago.

I don't have deal-breakers in terms of there being movies I won't see on principle because a certain actor or actress is in it. Even the crappiest most horrible actors or actresses can occasionally appear in good movies and TV show

In terms of the political views of certain actors and actresses, I feel that boycotting a whole show or movie because of one actor or actress -even if she is the main actor or actress -can be potentially unfair when you take into account the other cast on the show who may not share those views. I used to be like that -for example I used to boycott "Everybody Loves Raymond" because of Patricia Heaton. But then I read about Peter Boyle and his lifelong liberal activism. If I boycott the show because of Patricia Heaton, I am also in effect boycotting him as well. Similarly, if I boycott "Frasier" because of Kelsey Grammar and his right wing nutiness, I am also boycotting David Hyde Pierce -whom I've heard is very liberal. Should I boycott "Happy Days" because of right-wing tool Scott Baio despite the fact that Henry Winkler and Ron Howard are great liberals? The same principle more or less applies to movies. Should I boycott "It's a Wonderful Life" because James Stewart was a Republican and should I boycott to "To Kill A Mockingbird" because Robert Duvall is a conservative right wing Republican? So that's my difficulty with boycotting actors/actresses on principle because of their political views

That having been said, are there actors and actresses whom I don't like and whose movies I am more than likely than not to avoid because they are in them (unless I can be persuaded otherwise)? Yes definitely....

Those who come to mind are
-Kate Bosworth
-Will Ferrell
-Adam Sandler
-Rob Schneider
-Tom Cruise (although I liked some of his earlier movies and liked him as an actor back when he was married to Nicole Kidman)
