Career women were demonized in the movies. See "Fatal Attraction", "Working Girl", and "Baby Boom". Career women were seen as cold-hearted and lacking.

Starting in the 90s and continuing into the millenium, romantic comedies all became about getting married. The message was clear: you cannot find fulfillment as a woman until you are married, no matter how well the other parts of your life are doing. Marriage is the single biggest reason for your existence on planet Earth.

Again, this was in total contrast to what 70s women were all about. They were about freedom and independence, building your own career, and having fun being single.
