A performer writes a song that is then recorded by a performer, versus a singer-songwriter who performed her own work.

In the case of Joni Mitchell, she was seeing Graham Nash at the time. I’m sure he heard her sing it before CSNY sang it. She didn’t cover her own song; she is the originator. No question that CSNY’s version sold more records.
