A performer writes a song that is then recorded by a performer, versus a singer-songwriter who performed her own work.
In the case of Joni Mitchell, she was seeing Graham Nash at the time. Im sure he heard her sing it before CSNY sang it. She didnt cover her own song; she is the originator. No question that CSNYs version sold more records.
