In reply to the discussion: Name an item/items that Boomers bought or use that will be gone when they are gone. My pick are those God awful Thomas [View all]Reproductions of original art can be good investments. It's not new. People like Rembrandt and Durer did etchings and made more than one copy, Antiques Roadshow can tell you what some of them are worth. But besides having to be good art at least, and preferably great art, The publisher needs to gusrd the artist and the artisi's name from not unly unauthorized reproduction, but even from authorized reproduction. When I started seeing Kincade art on things like keychains, trinket boxes, diaries, and other objects, I knew it was virtually over.
We published an artist also we did our best to keep the works rare while still achieving enough publicity. Limited editions were never more than 300 (and would have been smalleer had we not been aholesaling so,e go galleris all over the country Alaska, Minnesota, Georgis, Arizona, to name just a few. We were careful whiat images we chose too release as limited editions, and also released a number of open editions as posters with our gallery name so that pretty much anyone could afford something by the artist, and were clear that posters had no investment value. Manufacturers wanted to put the images on trinket like Kinkade, we would never alllow that. We even had requests from tattoo artists to us the images (not only no, but hell no)
I just googled the artist, and even with all that caution, the limiteds are mostly down. Some of that is people's poor decisions on whom to offer them through. I found one carrier apecializing in secondary market art who is offering one or two at higher than issue price, though not much more than inflation. I found one gallery which had an unframed original being offeered at a higher price than they were going for in the 90's, but also not much more than inflation. And we were careful. I shudder to think what Kinkades must be going for now. Maybe it's better he's not alive to know.
I know I've wandered far from your original topic, but I'm afraid this pushed some buttond for me. Thank you for being here for me to ramble on.
