(3,807 posts)The sales people are extremely nice, I agree. They are also very coy in their responses to questions about availability of a particular model, etc. We had a very helpful salesperson in the Boston authorized dealer when we were there on vacation. After asking my usual questions about wait times, she candidly stated that she would never sell a watch to me since I did not reside in the local market and she advised that we contact the store in L.A. and establish a relationship with that store to increase our chances of getting a watch. Which we did. The salesperson in the L.A. store said she could get us a different model much more quickly than the one I wanted and if I bought the other watch first, which was about the same price as the watch I really wanted, it would increase my chances of actually getting the watch I wanted. But I figured if I am going to have to buy 2 watches to get the one I actually want, I might as well go to the grey market and get the brand new watch I want and pay double the price for it, which is what I ended up doing.
If I ever do get the call that my watch is available to purchase from the Rolex dealer, I may still buy it since these watches are great investments and enough time has passed for me to build up my financial reserves again!
I hear this is not that uncommon for luxury goods. They sell their most popular items to repeat customers and if you are a new customer you have to jump through some hoops to get what you want.
Did you know that you cannot buy a new Ferrari unless you've already owned one? You basically have to buy a used Ferrari first and when you are finally granted the right to buy a new Ferrari, it has to be red!
