(8,320 posts)103. The actual Commandant
was Friedrich Wilhem von Wildau. Born 1880 served in WW, was wounded 3 times, once severely. A proud Prussian, he detested the 3rd Reich, never joined the Nazi Party. He was then put in charge Stalag Luft III, the "Great Escape" camp. Both the allied prisoners and his staff revered him for his integrity and humanity. After the escape he avoided court-martial by feigning illness. Send back into combat he was wounded again. After the surrender, he spent about two years in prison. His former POWs supported him and he was released. He passed in 1963.
