The real story is tragic. The parents of a baby that went missing from the tent during a family camping trip were accused of murder. The mother made some protest of innocence about dingo predators and was held for ridicule. The Snopes' article describes how the parents were convicted and sent to prison. Later, the baby's jacket was found near dingo dens, which resulted in exoneration of the baby's parents and their release from prison.
