(1,163 posts)I feel you with internet costs. My recent change of location led me to a rental with "free" wif. It's part of the rent, which is a marked change from the last location where it was expensive. However, given that rent can go up almost at a whim (I signed the longest lease on offer), it isn't comforting. There may be relief if we can elect more progressives, though that seems iffy at this juncture.
Part of the progressives'/DSA's legislative ideas to provide critical services to "remote" and "underserved" communities (read: rural and communities of color, just not exclusively) is to mandate that USPS provide wifi. Conservatives and liberals tend to hate it, because it would potentially mean lower profits for corporate interests who contribute mightily to their campaigns and PACs (money is speech and speech gets 'ya elected); but it could reach more people at a lower cost than the commercial services. Post offices are everywhere, and they're often under-used. It's very anti-DeJoy, too. It would require some USPS Board repurposing - they'd have to have people on it who actually knew what they were doing.
For those worried about putting your internet flow in the hands of the government, are you more comfortable with it in corporate hands?
