3. I agree with the assessment: it's very nearly a perfect movie.

The cinematography might be the finest b&w in history. The casting is exquisite. The score is unforgettable. It was nominated for three Oscars: best director, best film editing, and best cinematography, winning for the last only. But today it is recognized as a film noir classic.
