This was way back in the olden days when you had to have a 'church key' to open the steel can.
After making a bet (usually) he'd punch one hole in the top, throw his head back and put the can to his lips, then punch a hole in the bottom and suck the entire contents out.
It; took about two seconds.
Never seen anything like it, before or since.
He was a hero to us 17 year olds.
