It stands for "Das Kleine Wunder" (the little wonder). They were made in Germany by Auto Union, which was made up of four makes, including Audi, which is the only brand to still be making cars. Audi kept the Auto Union logo of the four linked rings.
A lot of DKWs were also made in Brazil and South Africa which is where you can still find parts.

Grew up driving a AMC Pacer (which was embarrassing as hell). Also had a Saab 9-3 convertible.
