The problem is that an adaptation is obviously just the director's interpretation. And his or hers interpretation might not be the same as mine. The other problem is what to toss out because you're going to jettisoning about 80% of any given novel. Yet no matter what any given director does to your favorite novel, the book remains. I look at film adaptations as a way to augment the novel, not replace it.
