They pretty well begin to peter out around DC.
Was in a wedding, as a favor to an old friend, in upstate NY a number of years ago. I seem to recall the latter half of May. Anyway, as one drove north from DC, the most obvious harbinger of spring were the redbuds. Which got nicer and nicer as oen headed north.
Not a bad looking tree / bush even when they are out of bloom.
I have a few magnolias at my current abode. (For a retirement type community, I have a large lot. Just shy of half an acre.) They are all about ten years away from being wonderful. They are all the southern, grandiflora type. The Nat'l Arboretum has an entire section, a few acres, of various types of magnolias. They, too, take their time coming in during spring.

Yup. Frat reference. Don't know why it's not used more often. Now I say Kiss Off~ It's cleaner.

Actually, you might find this definition interesting - initials can be acronyms.
