Wife Assisted in Flag Raising Today for Memorial Day [View all]
Because of the surgery to my hand has not yet healed and it is still in splints, my wife Beth assisted me last night in lowering the village park flag to launder it.
(As the long-haired hippie socialist left-wing disabled veteran on the village board, I also double as the village flag committee.)
It is now, at sunrise on Memorial Day, back on the flagstaff. Per Federal statute, it will be raised to full mast at noon MDT.
This is the forty-fifth Memorial Day since the death of my father in Vietnam, and this day never becomes easier for me. But, for those who fought for the USA and paid in full measure for their devotion to duty, rendering such an honour on Memorial Day can never be enough.
Per Presidential proclamation:
As proclaimed each year by the President of the United States of America, Memorial Day is a day of prayer for permanent peace. All Americans are asked to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.
James A Kulacz, Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class, United States Navy (Retired-disabled). Restore Memorial Day to its rightful day on the calendar. It should be honoured for what it represents, not the first day to go to the beach.
