The first computer I ever got on line with was a Digital 486 with 16 meg ram about 2001.

Upgraded it to 64 megs ram, everything from places like the salvation army thrift store and so on

Took me 6 months to figure out how computers worked.

I bought a hard drive for it, replacing the original hd of about 165mb with a 500mb hd I found at the SA thrift store for 50 cents, still in it's static-free plastic.

When I formatted the hd, I called it DAVES41150

That was my total cost - $11.50 over 3 months to collect/dismember 4 computers and assemble into one workable machine.

That Digital was the one I used to initiate my participation here on DU.

Windows 95 it was - upgraded to win98SE shortly afterwards.

Now I have a laptop, my first. - Know nothing about them, so taking it apart is out of the question until I get another one.

BUT - it IS gonna come apart

(Dell Latitude D600 with XP3 upgraded to 2 Gigs ram)

It's misbehaving, and I'm gonna buy a new one soon - -

Then I'll have a look a Dell's innards!
