(177 posts)I keep it open most of the time for updates on some of my "likes" but really hate the games and other app crap. I now have all apps blocked. I also have well-meaning friends who post horrible pictures of mistreated animals. I usually have to hide those, being super sensitive to animal abuse. On the positive side, I am now able to catch up with old friends in distant places and find it easy to share a few pictures. I have unfriended people with totally obnoxious political views and one person who posted daily pictures/comments of her little girl/rich family. For the most part, if a post is not interesting, I just scroll right on by.
When I first started using FB, it felt like a competition to get the most friends. Since then I have whittled it down to those I care about. I do belong to a few groups which can be fun/useful. Membership to those can be limited to invite only and posts can be deleted by a moderator if things get out of hand. They are a good way to keep in touch with a specific set of folks with like interests.
