11. We never celebrate them

In fact, none of my friends knows when it is or even how old I am exactly.

As a kid, birthdays meant going off nearly every weekend to one of my parents' numerous siblings to sit in tiny, smoke-filled and overheated living rooms being served tiny cups of milky tea and biscuits and listening to banal family conversations and innuendo about absentees. While I'd be sitting there thinking how much rather I wanted to be at home reading, one of the aforementioned aunts or uncles would interrupt my thoughts telling me that I was becoming quite a big boy already and how was school coming along?

When it was my birthday, the same pack of relatives would come to our house, but I could at least disappear into my room after a while, feigning fatigue.

So, no, I never got into birthday parties
