If you don't know them, they could be spammers or random people looking to 'network' by accumulating as many connections as possible.

I use to to connect to recruiters, former co-workers (for references and to stay in touch) and they also have a 'jobs feed' you can subscribe to if you're on the market & articles by 'important people'.
