is likely to prevent naming conflicts. They will have an internal SQL (or similar) database of all the images on the site. They need to be able to index this database on some "primary key". This key needs to be a unique identifier for every image on the site. It's likely they are appending this key to the end of the image name to prevent namespace collisions and the like.
