The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
One of the few series I've read all the way through.
I'll second Heart of Darkness, as well.
I'm also a huge fan of post-apocalyptic books, so:
Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank.
Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.
The Stand by Stephen King. The four-part miniseries does very well as a substitute for the book as well.
