He did not make a lot of money during the original series run, the show was not highly rated and at the time audience demographics were not used as they are today. Even Shatner thought they would be cancelled after only 2 seasons. I think it was only after the show went to syndication and it turned into a cult series that Gene began to see any kind of money out of it.
