(12,132 posts)I'm only a couple months into being a DU member. I came here in self defense one day after being sooooooooooo tired of arguing with my conservative friends and family and coworkers, some of whom are in more than one of those groups. I just needed some liberal info and a google search brought me to you guys.
I just recently turned 48 and I also love Led Zeppelin and Rush and David Bowie and the Dallas Cowboys and Herradura and lots of other things including underground brutal technical and progressive death metal, old-timey country and bluegrass, some hip-hop and christmas music.
Born in Tallahassee, we moved around enough that I never went to the same elementary school for a two consecutive years. Ended up in Dallas, TX and lived there until I was 18. In between Tallahassee and Dallas I have lived in Atlanta GA, Florence, KY (my first baseball game was a Reds game with my dad. It was bat day and I got one signed by Bobby Tolan. I ruined it by using it to bat rocks through unfinished apartment sliding glass doors. I got in a lot of trouble for that.), several Florida cities, and Owings Mills, MD.
My mother divorced my dad when I was 12 and got religion so I was in a bat-shit crazy fundie house until I graduated from Christian High School and left home.
I am an atheist and a liberal and live in Orlando with my (nominally) Baptist wife of 25+ years and our slightly disabled daughter. I am rather proud of the fact that my wife's sons from her first marriage (she is my only) introduce me as dad and I was Best Man for the oldest one a few months ago. Especially since I wouldn't even eat the christmas fruitcake sent to me by my step-asshole. I figure he showed me how not to do it and I learned enough to not fuck up my wife's kids. Our kids.
My real mom and real dad have both passed away and it's kind of silly but I am glad I got to take my dad out dinner on my dime once before he died. Lol, there was a while there he thought I might be a lost cause. But I know he was proud of me for turning out reasonably OK.
I am glad I found this place even if it did change up on me. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't here longer and set in my ways but the change didn't bother me.
After all, change is what I voted for and the reason I'm here now.
