A major winter storm is spreading snow across much of the Midwest and Northeast today and early Friday, piling up impressive snow amounts in the Northeast. Meanwhile, blowing snow and bitter cold will accompany the storm, an added danger for the New Year`s first winter storm.

Due to the threat for heavy snowfall, Winter Weather Advisories stretch all the way from southern Illinois to western New York and central Pennsylvania. This includes Indianapolis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y.

Farther east, Winter Storm Warnings cover most of New York, eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, New Jersey, and most of New England. This includes Philadelphia, New York City and Albany, N.Y., Hartford, Conn., Boston and Portland, Maine. A Blizzard Warning has also been issued for Long Island and the coastal New England.

Two weather systems will merge together off the Mid-Atlantic tonight, passing southeast of Cape Cod on Friday morning before moving into the Canadian Maritimes Friday afternoon.

Snow has already fallen in the Midwest. This moderate snow dumped 2 to 4 inches across the Mid-Mississippi Valley and even 4 to 8 inches in some locations north of the Ohio River and into the eastern Great Lakes.

The highest snow amounts from this storm are expected from eastern New York across northern and central New England, with 12 to 18 inches possible from Albany, N.Y., to Boston, and across much of Vermont, New Hampshire and coastal Maine. Some locations north and east of Boston could even see 18 to 22 inches before it all winds down Friday.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will result in dangerous wind chills along with blowing and drifting snow, with near-blizzard conditions possible along the coastal areas of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where whiteout conditions will significantly impact travel. Blowing and drifting could also impact Long Island.

Around 12 inches of snow is expected across southern New England into the northern suburbs of New York City. For New York City itself, 4 to 8 inches of snow could accumulate by Friday morning.

Farther south, Philadelphia could see 4 to 6 inches of snow, while the Baltimore-Washington metro area will pick up 2 to 4 inches.

To make matters even worse, blustery northwest winds following the system will usher in a burst of arctic air Friday and Saturday. Highs on Friday will not climb above zero across upstate New York and northern New England, with single digits and low teens found as far south as New York City and northern Pennsylvania. Wind chill values will be even colder on Friday. Saturday morning`s lows will even be below zero in the greater New York City area.
