In reply to the discussion: Movies that no one likes but you like [View all]Lydia Leftcoast
(48,223 posts)49. One of the funniest movies EVER: Peking Opera Blues (1986)
Very, very slapstick, but it's slapstick that you've never seen before.
The Long Day Closes (1992) is a movie in which "nothings happens," except that it's director Terence Davies filming his disjointed memories and childhood fantasies growing up in 1950s England, accompanied by period songs. If you can let go of any expectations and just drift along with the scenes, it's a powerful experience. (I saw it with a group, and about half the people hated it, because they were waiting for a plot.)
No clip. I couldn't find one with good picture quality that wasn't the whole movie.
Whiskey Galore (1949)--This British comedy is not very P.C. these days, but it's about a Scottish island that is suffering from a whiskey shortage during World War II. Then a ship carrying whiskey runs aground on rocks near the island. Gordon Jackson (Hudson on the original Upstairs Downstairs) plays a man who is afraid of his mother.

Ha, yeah, it sure takes the mellow out of melodrama. So over the top you can't help but love it. nt
