(21,551 posts)After reading so many glowing reviews and comments about it for years, here and on imdv, I finally sat down and watched it around 2006 or so I think. Frankly I was let down, but I think my expectations were built up too much. Usually I like movies of this type, I'm a fan of cult and oddball films. I didn't like Jeff Bridges' attempt at being a Tommy Chong sort of character. And the constant parade of oddball bit characters just wore me out. It seemed like the Coen brothers were trying to manufacture a cult film, a John Waters-style film with a mixed bag of odd, eccentric characters but to me none of them had the charm or humanity of John Waters' characters. I'm not a prude at all and the F-word doesn't bother me in a movie, but I did get to wondering, "is that all they are going to say in this movie?" My neighbors show movies in their backyard in the summer and when I saw it on their schedule, I did warn them, "Have you seen it? There is a lot of foul language." About 30 people were there when it began but by the end only 4 people were there. I guess someday I'll give another try at this movie because apparently I'm missing the real point or something. I did really like their film "The Man Who Wasn't There," that was superb so the Coen brothers still rate highly in my mind because of that one.
