I hear about his passing soon after it happened and I am still processing it and have taken this long to put something in writing. The last time I felt like this was when Johnny Carson retired and when he passed away.
I have always had a wicked sense of humor. I loved to stay up late and watch Johnny Carson. To those of you too young to remember, Johnny Carson was THE place for up and coming comedians. I had a fantasy that I would preform on Johnny's show one day and be so funny that I would be invited to sit on the chair next to him after the break. If I cracked him up...I had it made.
Well I am not a comedian, although I still crack people up. I started coming to DU and eventually discovered the lounge. I learned the hard way to not be drinking liquids when opening MFM posts. Occasionally a witty retort would occur to me and I would post a reply. I would be thrilled if I elicited a response from MFM. It was as if Johnny Carson had called me back. More times than not MFM bested me, but I didn't mind-a battle of wits is always better if both people are armed.
As a Nurse, I picked up on his health concerns and frankly was concerned at his last visit. He soft pedaled it a bit but I think he was aware of the severity. I have had patients with similar wicked streaks. They are the ones that make you cross over the Nurse Patient lines a bit. They are the ones you you grow to love and whose death, no matter how much expected, still comes as a surprise. Their death stings and you think of them long after they are gone. I gather that he was at a facility where his humor was appreciated-any place that offers tag team baths and no pants Friday has got to be worth admission.
I am also glad there were other DU'ers around him for support and God Bless You. MFM is much loved.
