father. He was also a part-time farmer (his entire back yard was a garden) and a yellow dog Democrat. Only given a first name as a child, when he was a teenaged he adopted "Wilson" as his middle name in honor of Woodrow Wilson. He was the oldest of nine surviving children and lost his own father when he was 15, and the family home a few years later.
