We live in a rural area and there is a great deal of dirt and mud about. I take off my shoes once I enter and ask everyone else to do so. If someone were to refuse, I would be surprised, but fine. No one ever has. I think its a little disusting and rude for someone to not take off their shoes in someone's home. If I lived in a city I might feel differently.

I have some family members and friends who take their shoes off when they enter their homes
