I agree that atmospheric horror is far more effective than the graphic stuff, like Cat People (the original), The Innocents, The Night Of The Demon, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Night Of The Hunter, Cape Fear (original), The Haunting, The Spiral Staircase, Carnival Of Souls, The Leopard Man, Psycho, Diabolique, The Hound Of The Baskervilles (Basil Rathbone version). This first clip is from Jacques Tourneur's very atmospheric The Leopard Man, where we see no gore but we get plenty of suspense through the use of shadow and light. Another Jacques Tourneur gem of suspense is Cat People, where a woman walking alone at night is stalked by the cat woman and hears sounds and sees branches moving but nothing else. Creepy.
