are fake laugh tracks. Back in the old days they must have used it to cover bad jokes, or bad comedy. Like people needed to know when to laugh at stuff.

I think of it as rather being insulting..to our intelligence that we have to be "told" when to laugh as if we don't know funny when we hear it. Maybe people in Hollywood were just arrogant enough to add them, so as to tell the stupid audience, what was supposed to be funny, and what wasn't.
