Bowie Kuhn threw Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, both arguably among the game's all-time greats, out of baseball for taking jobs as casino greeters in the early 80s. This was before retired players could earn decent money on the autograph circuit, and they were promptly reinstated when Peter Ueberroth took over as commissioner.
