that sells re-conditioned appliances. So some of them get repaired/rebuilt and resold at least.

There's actually quite a bit to get out of old appliances if you're willing to dismantle them. Most big wholesalers and retailers won't bother, though. But there's steel in the frames/cases and a lot of copper in the motors and wiring.
