But I'm only a tiny cog here. I recently turned down an award because others deserved it much more than I. Fittingly, the award went to Mike, the guy on the other side of the teacher in the photo. One of my best friends and a brother I admire for all he does for vets here.

Mike does a hell of a lot more than I do, and I was happy to see his outstanding work recognized. And, though we didn't know it until we met many years later, Mike and I were brothers who served in different battalions of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam at the same time. I saw him tonight at a fundraiser for a local wounded warrior, and we had a bit of fun ragging on each other. All in good fun among guys who truly love each other.

His name is Mike Bertell, and he's the one who deserves the accolades, not me.

As for warmth and humor, I think that is something I learned, ironically, from my war experience. To cherish the humanity of ourselves and others and enjoy sharing the humor we find in life. We have a lot of DUers here who get it, and try, apart from serious contributions to discussions, to keep the fun alive. I'm just proud to be among them.
