And one reason for that is that we often don't behave online the way we do face to face. The anonymity of the internet makes it possible for people to feel like they can get away with being rude and nasty in a way that might get them punched in the nose if they said those things "live." Sometimes people feel very hurt when some stranger on the internet says something mean. If someone starts being a jerk I just quit reading the thread and don't take it seriously, but others may take it harder. In that sense, yes, it's not quite "real."
