they can cost between $10,000 and $20,000. The only full-auto weapons legal to own are those registered in 1986 or before, that is why they are so expensive. The owner has to go through an extensive background check and pay a $200 fee.
The cost is probably why full-auto weapons are never used in crime. There is only one instance of full-auto weapons used in a crime in the last 30 years that I can think of is the North Hollywood shootout in 1997.

FYI, assault rifles are capable of automatic fire and reqire the same licensing as that M-16. AR-15s are not capable of automatic firing.
