"How can you not want to feel like this longer?"
I'm not much of a drinker and I never quite "got" it either. After the initial buzz I felt like crap and didn't like it. No way did I want to feel that way longer. Maybe some people just feel differently than others.
I had a friend once who had a medical problem while we were on vacation. It wasn't serious but it was seriously annoying. We went to an Urgent Care place and she was offered pain pills so her vacation wasn't a complete bust. She declined, saying she didn't want to be in a haze the whole vacation. I'm like, "You're kidding, right?" That was my "How can you not want to feel that way" moment.

I've never understood it. Being aware in some situations is very painful, so I guess that's why.

Alcoholics crave more and more, they can't help it. It's not necessary that you "get it".

As a group, I'd say alcoholics are probably as intelligent as everyone else
