Peanuts and corn, but I also use the Yankee Flipper, which gently flips them off. My bird food is expensive, and the stuff squirrels like is not as expensive.

After they realized they'd "been had," one came over to the window where my computer was and told me off. It was very funny, being told off by a squirrel.

p.s. I've also heard of using Vaseline on the pole leading up to the bird feeder. Another one is to take a Slinky and attach it at the bottom and stretch it up the bird feeder pole. The wire coils prevent them from getting a grip.
