Gonna have some surgery on my foot next Thursday. [View all]
A few here may recall I've been confined to a wheelchair for about five years due to a rather nasty attack of arthritis. I had been in therapy for a while and was to the point where I could walk with the aid of a walker for a distance of about 250 ft. Then my feet suddenly got worse- my right foot has a bone that is trying to push its way out through the ball of my foot. It became too painful (and dangerous) to walk further than to the restroom and back.
I saw two podiatrists, both of whom ran screaming from the room when they saw my tootsies. Well, okay, maybe they didn't actually run, but they both said there was nothing to be done. I was out of luck.
Then a couple months ago I saw the head surgeon at the Indianapolis Veteran's Hospital podiatry clinic. She ran screaming from the room-- wait, that's not right. She smiled and said no problem, when do you want to schedule your surgery?
I had my pre-op meeting yesterday, and on the 28th I do the deed. I'll be off my feet (more than usual) for a few weeks, then later in the year I'll have the other foot done.
Perhaps I'll be back on my feet after all. No doubt I'll always use a walker or a pair of canes, but at least with some patented DU vibes I'll be able to park this wheelchair for a few years.
Here's hoping.
