It was a small independent film that won several awards on the film festival circuit in 1990, including the audience award at Sundance. You can get a used DVD on Amazon for a few bucks. Like Bull Durham, it's set in the world of minor league baseball, but it's about an older white player mentoring a young black player.

I did not have to look it up. I saw it in a theater when it was new and have perhaps overly fond
