5. I saw the two Santa Clara nights on video...

...better than I expected. The surviving musicians have the right to say goodbye. Not the Dead, just the guys who survived saying goodbye with Chementi and Hornsby and Anastasio.

I've been observing the 50th in my own way, listening to a lot of Dead, when they were the Dead...when Jerry was on board.

I've never been a fan of "The Brent Years" because I never really cared for his voice...at the time, I thought of him as a poor man's Michael McDonald. I also failed to appreciate his overly brittle synth sound on much of his playing. But most of all, it killed me to hear the deterioration of Jerry's voice.

But in order to be a well-rounded fan of the band on their 50th, I did make a Brent era mix CD, and the performance of "Stella Blue" from "Dozin' At The Nick" made it on the list. Jerry's voice isn't at its best but somehow the "ragged glory" really fits:
