Doesn't work if not constantly manned and pruned (and patrolled outside the fortification).
They just give you time to deal with the problem.
So as things get breached, move more cheval de frise into place.
I had to make a version our of barbed wire and five poles repeatedly in WWII. Light, easy, quick to build. Ten guys could circle the town in a day or so. Then add a layer, and another, and another. 50 yards thick.
They're in rural areas. It's not like they would run out of barbed wire and trees.
