Wound exudate is assessed for amount, type, color and odor. Exudate may be serous, sero-sanguineous, sanguineous or purulent. Exudate consists of the exuding wound fluid, serum or blood and the by-products of topical dressings and treatments. Exudate may be thin or thick and take on various colors. Exudate odor may reflect underlying infection or be the by-product of the dressing or action of the dressing/treatment.
