In reply to the discussion: So let me get this straight with "The Hunger Games" [View all]murielm99

"The Giver" is a Newberry book. I was still an active librarian when it won. It was one that I predicted correctly as a winner. It has a couple of sequels. I do not think the sequels are as good.
I have always felt that if we could get kids reading, that was best. It did not matter what they read. We could guide their tastes later. I may buy these books. I know it will be impossible to check them out of the library right now. I just wondered if they were worth the effort. I did not think the Twilight books were worth the effort.

They have a very strong female protagonist. That's what my daughter enjoyed about the book.

I read the books and saw the movie, and thought they were both great.

Kids shouldn't be exposed to images of mass slaughter. Ban the Bible, I say!
