It's a local unionized company. The starting pay is $3 an hour more than I make now. The insurance is better than what I currently have at about the same price. The best thing? I can see a future at this company and my bachelor's degree may help me work into better positions. At my current employer, they don't even care that I have a degree. Just drive the truck, dummy, and turn off your brain.
Things have really slowed down at work. I was getting 55 hours a week on average there for a long time, and I needed that overtime to help me get by. Then they hired another driver when they really didn't need one and I started losing hours. Maybe it makes more sense to them to try to avoid paying overtime, but it's going to result in them losing a good driver- if I must say so myself...and around there nobody else is going say it.
Another good thing about the potential new job is that I'd no longer be out on the road all day. The new job is loading trucks, switching trailers, and ensuring the trailers out in the yard that are loaded with product are at the correct temperature. It's a food processing company and all of their trailers are temperature controlled. I'd be working in a cooler most of the day. It's 43 degrees in there so I won't be sweating my ass off anymore in the summer. I know that prolonged exposure to that temperature can make you mighty cold, but I'm pretty sure I can handle it if I dress right for it and I'll be moving around a lot so that will help me keep warm.
They want to do a background check on me and they are going to get back with me on Monday. I really hope I get this job.
