Cats can pretty well take care of themselves and take out a couple of doggie eyeballs if pooch doesn't watch their step. LOL! If you get one as a pup the kitties will teach it pretty quick not to mess with them.
I don't know if prey drive extends to carnivores even if they are small. My akitas were/are all very prey driven but not with cats or foxes... maybe they know the difference between which critters are hunters and which are the hunted all on their own.
Unfortunately, my current dog is also prey driven to MY food. He knows not to touch it and won't, but he figured out a clever way to cheat (another example of how damn smart these dogs are)... I wear sweatpants or elastic band shorts around the house all the time depending on the weather. I often eat upstairs in front of the computer (yeah, I know!), and he figured out that when following me up the stairs when I have a plate of food in one hand and a glass of something in the other that he can yank my pants down to my ankles so I don't have any choice but to set something down to pull my pants up (you can't walk upstairs with your pants around your ankles!). And once that something has been set down on the ground he figures it's fair game. Sneaky clever stinker!
I figured out how to foil this rotten manuever of his though... the one handed tray! I just have to remember to always use the tray and hang onto my pants with the free hand. I can already see him thinking how to cleverly get around my tray foil though. I swear you can watch them coniving and planning!
One of my neighbors a few streets away has a 12 year old Shiba Inu. When they take her for walks their two cats trot along with them. If one disappears (they like to walk in their own way taking their time and climbing into shrubbery and whatnot), she gets upset and looks all over for the wayward kitty until it shows up. It takes them awhile to get down the street that way. LOL! Her owners say she won't go for her walks without her kitties though. I believe it... both Shiba Inu's and Akitas are so similar including their whacky traits.
