My dad gave me tools before I went to college. I was the only one who had them, so lots of people came to borrow. Great ice breaker. Plus, you can spend as much or as little as you want. Just get good tools, not cheap stuff. A hammer, a few screwdrivers of different types and sizes, a pair of pliers, maybe a toolbox.
