Hunt (play) eat it, clean off the blood and all so you can safely sleep without attracting predators, then sleep. Wake up and do it all over again. It's easier to just go with their cycle, especially when it comes to feeding to get them to sleep.

And play time worth you just helps run off that extra energy that might be used with too aggressive play with orher cats. And it's easier to get them to do it if it's not after a meal.
